Men’s health is about more than testosterone. Your energy, strength, mood, metabolism, cardiovascular health, prostate health, and long-term wellness all depend on having the right nutrients and building blocks available to your body.
In my work with men—from their teens through their 70s—I’ve seen how often nutritional imbalances can be overlooked. Vitamin D, iodine, and magnesium are three nutrients I commonly find below optimal levels, and each plays an important role in overall health.
Vitamin D is much more than a vitamin for bones. It supports immune function, muscle health, mood, hormone function, and cardiovascular health. Maintaining adequate vitamin D status is an important part of a comprehensive approach to men’s wellness.
Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production and metabolism, which influence energy, temperature regulation, brain function, and virtually every system in the body. The thyroid also plays an important role in maintaining healthy metabolic function throughout life.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions. It supports muscle and nerve function, energy production, blood sugar regulation, relaxation, sleep, and cardiovascular function. Adequate magnesium status is especially important as we look at the bigger picture of heart and metabolic health.
But these are only pieces of the puzzle.
I also like to look at iron and ferritin, B12 and folate, blood sugar and metabolic markers, cholesterol and triglycerides, thyroid markers, inflammatory markers, and—when appropriate—prostate-related markers such as PSA. Looking at multiple markers together can reveal patterns that may be missed when we focus on a single number.
A man can have “normal” labs and still not feel his best. Fatigue, low motivation, poor sleep, brain fog, decreased exercise tolerance, mood changes, or changes in strength and recovery can all be signs that it’s worth looking deeper.
I believe in testing rather than guessing. Your age, symptoms, health history, diet, lifestyle, genetics, medications, and environmental exposures all provide important context when interpreting your numbers.
Whether you’re a young man wanting to build a strong foundation, a man in his 40s or 50s noticing changes in energy and metabolism, or someone looking to support healthy aging, your numbers can give you valuable information about what your body needs.
You don’t have to wait until something is wrong to start paying attention.
