Men’s wellness is about more than testosterone. Energy, strength, mood, metabolism, cardiovascular wellness, prostate wellness, and healthy aging are influenced by many different factors, including nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, stress, and overall wellness habits.
In my work with men—from their teens through their 70s—I’ve seen how easy it can be to overlook the nutritional foundation that supports overall well-being. Vitamin D, iodine, and magnesium are three nutrients I commonly explore in wellness education, and each plays an important role in the body.
Vitamin D is well known for its role in bone health and also has connections to immune and muscle function. Maintaining adequate vitamin D status can be an important part of a comprehensive approach to wellness.
Iodine is an essential nutrient involved in thyroid hormone production and normal metabolic function. Understanding dietary sources and individual nutritional needs can be an important part of nutrition education.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions and supports normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism, and many other processes throughout the body. Adequate magnesium intake is an important part of a balanced nutritional foundation.
But these are only pieces of the bigger picture.
Depending on individual goals and available information, wellness education may also include iron and ferritin, B12 and folate, blood sugar and metabolic markers, cholesterol and triglycerides, thyroid markers, and other commonly available laboratory information. When appropriate, I can also provide educational support around understanding health information to discuss with your healthcare provider, including prostate-related markers such as PSA.
Laboratory results are only one piece of the wellness picture. How you feel, your health history, nutrition, lifestyle, medications, environmental factors, and other individual circumstances can all provide important context.
I believe in testing rather than guessing. The purpose isn't to focus on one number, but to use available information as an educational tool and help you better understand your overall wellness picture.
Whether you’re a young man wanting to build a strong foundation, a man in his 40s or 50s noticing changes in energy and daily routines, or someone focused on healthy aging, learning more about your nutrition and wellness can help you make informed choices.
You don’t have to wait until you have a specific health concern to start paying attention to your wellness.
